GUWAAHTI, March 23 Information obtained through RTI by Social Justice Forum, Assam, has revealed serious discrepancies in crucial documents concerning the incumbent principal of the Assam Engineering Institute (AEI).

The Forum has also urged the State Government to institute a high-level inquiry into the anomalies and necessary follow-up action.

The copy of the Master of Technology pass certificate (from Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj University Kanpur) of the principal, Akshay Chandra Kalita, which was obtained from the Dept of Higher Education (Technical), Assam, mentions the M.Tech examination year as 2003, and the year of issuance as 2004. It has two signatures by a kulasachib and a kulapati but without any dates.

The pass certificate also mentions the certificate-holder to have obtained first division instead of first class.

The mark-sheet, on the other hand, mentions that the examination was held in February 2005, and that the holder obtained the mark-sheet on March 7, 2005. Since the pass certificate was issued in 2004, this would effectively mean that the holder got the pass certificate even before the examination was held in 2005.

The mark-sheet has two glaring spelling mistakes in the very name of the university written in bold capital letters. It spells the word UNIVERSITY as UNVERSITY with the letter I missing and the name CHHATRAPATI as CHHATRAPTI, with the letter A missing.

Such lapses put a serious question mark over the genuineness of the certificates as also the credentials of the issuing authorities, including the university concerned. We believe that a high-level inquiry into these anomalies is urgently needed, Golap Majumdar, president of the Forum, said.

Majumdar said that the principal of a technical institute must have a postgraduate degree approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) but the AIEs incumbent principals documents did not mention any AICTE approval.
