GUWAHATI, Feb 22 The Assam RTI Forum has lauded the Gauhati High Court judgment in response to a writ petition filed by Pankaj Kumar Nath, general secretary, All Assam Journalists Association. The judgment criticised the Assam Information Commission for intentionally and objectively denying and indefinitely delaying information by unfavourably taking side of a public authority.

It is a matter of great embarrassment and rather shameful for an independent, autonomous organisation like the Information Commission to be criticised and pulled up by the honourable High Court The RTI Act has given tremendous powers to the State Information Commission, but it seems in Assam, instead of using these powers to compel the Government departments to act as per the rules laid down under the Act, the Commission is seen giving undue favours to the corrupt officials in spite of having numerous evidence against them.

It should be an eye-opener to the State Information Commission, and the people expect the authority to work proactively in favour of RTI applicants, the forum stated.
