Rs 20 lakh cash recovered; two held for carrying beef

JORHAT, April 7 - During a routine checking, police on Thursday recovered cash of Rs 20 lakh from a passenger namely Gopal Sil, who was allegedly carrying the currency notes from Mariani town.

Police informed the income tax officials to confirm whether the cash was carried legally or not. However, he is yet to be arrested.

In another case, a local court here sent two persons to judicial custody and a juvenile to an observation home after they were arrested on Wednesday by police on the charge of hurting public sentiments at Kenduguri area by carrying beef.

The two accused persons, who were sent to jail, were identified as construction worker Abdul Rahman of Kokrajhar and Sahjamal Haque of Dhubri. Locals alleged that the trio openly showed a small bag of beef to a few people of the locality and sought spices from a family for cooking.

As the local citizens felt that their sentiment was hurt by the trio they informed the matter to the police.
