RPF, UNLF own up Manipur ambushes

IMPHAL, Oct 27 - Manipur-based proscribed Revolutionary People�s Front (RPF) has claimed responsibility for the ambush on troops of 44 Assam Rifles at a place located in between Khuikai and Sampui Lamkhai in Ukhrul district bordering Myanmar on Monday morning.

RPF publicity secretary Roben Khuman claimed in a press release here that its armed wing, the People�s Liberation Army killed two personnel of the 44 Assam Rifles in an ambush that took place around 9.30 am on Monday which also led to injuries to many others. The outfit also claimed to have recovered an assault rifle and a large numbers of bullets from the Assam Rifles team, the release said.

On Monday, Assam Rifles� Junior Commissioned Officer Suresh Tamang was killed when armed PLA cadres ambushed a patrol party of the 44 Assam Rifles in Ukhrul district, sources said.

On Sunday, too, an Assam Rifles personnel, Paokhulet Baite (31) was killed and two others injured in an ambush at Satang village near Kwatha village in Chandel district of Manipur.

The United National Liberation Front (UNLF), another Manipur-based armed group, claimed in a press release that its armed wing, Manipur People�s Army carried out the ambush.

It may be mentioned here that night curfew has been imposed along the 380-km stretch of Indo-Myanmar border in Manipur�s Ukhrul, Chandel and Churachandpur districts prohibiting movement of any person within 5 km of the international border since October 12.
