Row over appointment of new Tripura Governor

By Correspondent

AGARTALA, March 12 Putting a question mark on the appointment of new Governor Devanand Konwar, Chief Minister Manik Sarkar today said the Centre had not followed the convention in appointing him.

Sarkar told reporters that there was a convention of having a discussion between the Chief Minister and Union Home Minister while choosing a new Governor.

This time the conventional discussion between the State and the Centre has not been followed by the Centre. In fact the Centre has appointed a new Governor without any consultation with the State, he lamented.

Sarkar said he had talked to Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde over the phone. I tried to make him (Shinde) understand that the State Government has already prepared the Governors speech to be delivered on March 15, the opening day of the Assembly session. But he did not give any positive response to the issue raised by me, he said.

Terming the appointment of Konwar as the new Governor of the State as undesirable, Sarkar said the Centre could have informed the State authorities before picking up Konwar for the coveted post.

On the post-poll violence in the State, Sarkar said he had sought a report from Director General of Police (DGP) Sanjay Sinha.
