Ronit clinches U-12 crown

NUMALIGARH, March 25 � Top seed Ronit Bora of Guwahati won the boys U-12 title in the 5th Kaliyani Open Tennis Tournament at the Numaligarh Refinery township here today with a facile 6-3, 6-1 victory against his unseeded team mate Debasish Medhi 6- 3, 6-1. Ishani Goswami prevailed over Debangana by 2-6, 6-1, 6- 3 in a hard fought final in girls section.

Vitsizolie Negi of Nagaland continued with giant killing run defeating Ankit Kashyap from Guwahati 6-7(6-8), 6-3, 6-2 in the boys U-14 summit clash. In girls U-14, Shreshtha Baruah from Jorhat got the better of Sunita Mohanty from Guwahati by 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.

Local girl second seed Maitraee Phukan of NRL won her final match over top seed Suranjita Saikia of Guwahati 6-4, 6-2.

In boys U-18, top seed Madhurya Dutta from Guwahati displayed his full array of shots as he annihilated the 2nd seed Anurangshu Borthakur also from Guwahati 6-2, 6-4.

The final matches were witnessed by Raktim Saikia, general secretary of All Assam Tennis Association and president of Kaliyani Club MR Barua.

Total prize money of Rs 1,25,000 was distributed among the participants with the winners of U-18 boys won Rs 10,000, U-18 girls won Rs 9,000. U-14 boys and girls won Rs 6,000 and Rs 5,000 respectively while U-12 boys won Rs 4,000 and girls won Rs 3,000, stated a release.
