Rongali Bihu function at Silchar from today

SILCHAR, May 9 � The Silchar Rongali Bihu Sammelan will celebrate Rongali Bihu here at the Deshbhakta Tarun Ram Phukan HS School on May 10 and 11.

Jiten Medhi, working president of the Sammelan said that the celebrations will not only add on to the festive spirits, but will also be an endeavour to lessen the divide between the two Valleys. Elaborating on the celebrations, Medhi said there will be a cultural rally which will be flagged off from the school. It will snake its way across the main streets of Silchar town before culminating at the school. Also there will be various competitions like Mou Kunwari, Bihu Husori and cultural events followed by the prize distribution ceremony. He said that local artistes and invited guest artistes from Barak Valley will perform cultural items on the opening day.

On the following day, seven eminent personalities will be felicitated by the Sammelan. Also, a souvenir will be released followed by an attractive cultural programme. Famed artistes Nisha and Nupur, besides guest artistes from Guwahati are scheduled to perform along with Nataraj Bihu group of Guwahati, Medhi informed. The working president therefore urged people from all walks of life to attend the celebrations in order to make it a grand success.
