Rongali Bihu celebrated in Nalbari district

NALBARI, April 15 - The Nalbari anchalik unit of the AASU organised a day-long �Mukoli Bihu� on the premises of Nalbari�s AASU office on April 14.

The day-long programme began with the hoisting of the AASU and the Asom Unnati Sabha flags by Tagar Baishya, president of the Nalbari anchalik unit of AASU and Dinamani Bhagawati, president of the Nalbari district unit, Asom Unnati Sabha.

The Mukoli Bihu was inaugurated by Himan Barman, organising secretary of the All Assam Students� Union (AASU). In his speech, Barman said that bihu bears the special identity of Assamese culture. �We should unitedly keep it alive,� he added. The Deputy Commissioner of Nalbari, Dr Om Prakash attended the function as a guest.

On the occasion, a total of 60 senior citizens, artistes, litterateurs were felicitated with bihuwan and other bihu gifts. A good number of artistes also took part in the Mukoli Bihu function. The guests and other people who attended the Mukoli Bihu were served doi,chira, gur and sweets as bihu jalpan.

Meanwhile, the Nalbari district unit of the AJYCP also offered bihuwan to the senior citizens of Nalbari town at their doorsteps on the first day of Bohag.

Earlier, on Goru Bihu, the community bathed their cattle heads at the rivers Pagladiya, Baralia, Buhradiya and Mora Pagladiya besides the ponds and beels with traditional fervour. The Dakshin Ulabari Rongali Bihu Sanmilani also celebrated Rongali Bihu on April 13, 14 and 15 with a three-day programme. On the occasion, a cultural procession was also taken out in this locality on April 13. One-act play and Bihu dance competitions were also held on the occasion.
