Road named after Mary Kom

IMPHAL, Aug 26 � A road in Churachandpur has been named as �MC Mary Kom Road� on Sunday. An announcement was made in a grand felicitation function of the Olympic bronze medalist boxer MC Mary Kom at Churachandpur Public ground today.

The first ever Indian Olympic medalist in women boxing was also honoured with numerous gift hampers, a cash award of Rs 1.5 lakh and a mithun in the day�s reception function.

On Saturday, the mother of twin boys was also awarded a cash award of Rs 5 lakhs while her fellow Olympians- L Bombayla (Archery), L Devendro (Boxing), Ng Sonia (Weightlifting) and Kh Kothajit (Hockey) Rs 1 lakh each in a State Home department sponsored reception in Imphal. So far Mary Kom got cash award of Rs 75 lakhs from Manipur Government, Rs 10 lakhs from Ministry of Tribal Affairs Ministry.

Speaking on the occasion, the 29 year old world champion appealed to bring peace and unity in the trouble torn State to bring more laurels in future.

�Through this medal, let�s bring peace, unity and respect to each other,� said Mary Kom. �These things are needed to bring more laurels for the land.�

Manipur sports persons could not focus in their respective competitions due to unrest back home as it always distracts them from making it, she felt.

On Saturday she was also felicitated in four different functions in Imphal including colourful reception function at UNNACO group of company.
