NEW DELHI, Feb 3 The Railway Ministry has ordered an inquiry into the accident of the Bongaigaon-Guwahati Chilarai passenger by the Chief of Railway safety (Eastern Zone).

The driver of the ill-fated Bongaigaon-Guwahati Chilarai passenger train may have applied brakes to avoid the accident, Railway experts here opined.

Sources pointed out derailment of the bogies indicated that the driver of the train may have applied brakes to stop the train. Such engines require about a km to completely come to a halt, sources said.

Sources said that the Railway Ministry is seized of the problem of unmanned rail crossings. It is estimated that there are 14,896 unmanned and 17,839 manned crossings in the country. This year the Railway Ministry had targeted to convert 1500 unmanned crossings to manned crossings and so far 1200 such unmanned crossings have been converted so far.
