River fest hit as rains play spoilsport

By Correspondent

BARPETA, April 2 - Incessant rains since Saturday have spoiled the enthusiasm of the Namami Brahmaputra Festival held along the Brahmaputra shore on the foothills of Baghbar hill in Barpeta district.

Barring a few most of the programmes scheduled on Sunday had to be abandoned owing to the will of God which seemed to dishearten the local people as well as the organisers the district administration.

The most attractive programme of the day was a cultural procession which would definitely depict the rich and multifarious cultural heritage of Barpeta district. The boat tour and the river kite flying, cultural show and the exhibition of local fireworks were abandoned. Besides the inauguration of Hadira, the souvenir published on this occasion was postponed.

The only two events conducted on Sunday were adventurous sports inaugurated by Gunindra Nath Das, MLA Barpeta and an exhibition on beauty of cattle inaugurated by Dr Hitesh Pathak, Veterinary Officer, Patacharkuchi.

However if the weather does not improve, the programmes for the last two days to be held at Baghbar may face similar fate.
