Rise in trend of women killing

GUWAHATI, Aug 8 - The incidents of killing of women has been showing a rising trend in the State during the past five years with Assam recording 2,118 such incidents from 2011 till July this year.

In a written reply to the question raised by BPF legislator Kamali Basumatary, State Transport, Industries and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary stated that 840 women have been killed due to dowry during the period.

Other major reasons for murder of women include domestic violence, witch- hunting and rape.

In 2011, various police stations of the State recorded 319 femicide cases, with 132 due to dowry, 23 due to witch- hunting and six rape and murder cases, whereas 148 women were killed for several other reasons than those already mentioned.

In 2012, such incidents claimed the lives of 348 women, 145 being dowry- related murders, 168 for other reasons and 11 rape and murder cases. In 2013, 393 women were killed among which 146 were dowry-related deaths and 17 women were murdered due to rape.

In the next two years, the count went up to 414 and 413 respectively, recording a simultaneous increase in dowry-related murder cases. A total of 159 and 167 women have been killed due to dowry in both the years respectively. Twenty women were killed due to witch-hunting incidents. This year too, 91 women have been murdered for dowry and 23 in domestic violence. Till July 2016, a total of 231 women have been murdered.
