Rise in extortion rackets at Sivasagar

By Correspondent

SIVASAGAR, Aug 26 - The escalating cases of money extortion especially from the business community in the Sivasagar area have raised many eyebrows. The entire region is facing problems of rampant extortion from businessmen, employee and general people.

The business community like Hindi and Bengali speaking people are largely targeted by some leaders of so-called nationalist organisation whose real objective is to make easy money.

Requesting anonymity, several businessmen of the Sivasagar town alleged that members of some Brihattar Asomiya Yuva Mancha (BAYM), Sivasagar Town Committee, have created a terror-like situation among the businessmen with frequent extortion demands.

Shopkeepers of Hospital Road, Dolmukh Charialai, Muktinath Chariali and Station Chariali alleged that some members of the BAYM demanded money on a regular basis from them. Even owners of small shops, grocers, stationery shops, tailors and even vendors were not spared by the gang.

There are also reports that the extortion party under the leadership of one Saikia and one Saha has demanded heavy amount of money from owners of hotels, restaurants and lodges. They also said that they were scared to approach the police as they suspect a nexus between the extortion gang and some police officials.

Manirul Islam Bora, working president of Ujani Assam Muslim Kalyan Parishad, said, Some organisations have come up pledging to work for the welfare of society and its people, but in reality, mostly of them are in easy money making business through extortion.
