By AMBUNATH SHARMA

GAURIPUR, Aug 3 - Cultivation of ridge gourd or ridged luffa by a number of cultivators of Madhusoulmari pt-I under 23 Dhubri LAC has made them financially sound, even if the last round of floods did cause a lot of damage. One of the progressive farmers involved in ridge gourd farming in the village is Abdur Rab Sheikh, who by sheer hard work has become an inspiration to many in the area. By cultivating ridge gourd in two bighas of land, he has become an ideal cultivator. Some other cultivators of the village like Abul Hussain, Meser Ali, Kalimuddin Ahmed, Hussain Ali and Abdul Haque also followed his methods and are happy with the output.

In this season, Abdur Rab Sheikh purchased seeds of ridge gourd from the local market at Rs 50 per 100 grams. Before sowing seeds, he carefully ploughed the land and applied cowdung as manure and made the land into several heaps, sowed seeds during the beginning of March and covered the sowed seeds by straw. After 10-13 days, the seeds began to sprout. Bamboo frames were carefully erected so that the ridge gourds could easily climb. He spent nearly five to seven thousand of rupees annually.

During the early part of the May, he plucked the matured ridge gourd and started selling. He was able to sell nearly 40 quintals this year and earned Rs 1.20 lakh. As the weather was not favourable this year, production was less than the previous years.

Meanwhile, Abul Hussain planted ridge gourd in 1 bigha, Kalimuddin Ahmed in 1.5 bighas, Hussain Ali in bigha and Meser Ali in 1 bigha. They were also happy as the demand of this vegetable is high in the market and they were able to earn a lot of profit.

The ridge gourd is a very healthy vegetable because it contains Vitamin C for keeping away colds, Vitamin B for good mood and vitality, Zinc for strengthening our immune system, iron for anemia, manganese and magnesium for enzyme production and immunity, and calcium and phosphorus for strong bones. Further it is also an average source of Vitamin B complex such as thiamin, niacin, pantothenic acid, pyridoxine and minerals. Ridge gourd is very rich in dietary fibre and rich with all the vital elements.

The farmers are usually adopting the traditional method of cultivation without proper knowledge and guidance from the Department of Agriculture and as a result they try to increase production without quality production, which is not at all healthy and advisable.
