Rich tributes paid to organiser Pulin Das

GUWAHATI, July 24 � Noted sports organiser Pulin Das, who died on July 16, was remembered at a memorial meeting organised jointly by the Assam Cricket Association and Assam Sports Journalists� Association at the Barsapara cricket stadium here today.

Recalling his sterling contributions towards the development of Assam sports, former Assam Ranji Trophy team captain Badal Thakur said, Das was a true sportsman and always guided the upcoming sportsmen to work hard in order to improve their performance. Thakur said, Pulin Das led the Guwahati cricket team in inter-district cricket tournaments where he was also a member.

Renowned commentator Dipu Choudhury in his speech said, Pulin Das was a pioneer in airing running commentary in All India Radio (AIR) in 1950s. Due to his efforts only the officials of the AIR were ready to broadcast running commentary of the Bordoloi Trophy final.

Other speakers like Umesh Sarma, Achyut Borthakur, Balendra Mohan Chakravorty, Subodh Malla Baruah, Pradip Chaliha and Pradip Kumar Hazarika said, Pulin Das was a dedicated sportsperson and organiser. Due to his singular efforts organisations like Assam Cricket Association, Assam Football Association, Assam Table Tennis Association, Assam Tennis Association etc were set up.

The meeting was presided over by ACA president Gautam Roy, who said, it is rare to have a sports organiser like Pulin Das, who ran several organisations almost single handedly.

ACA secretary Bikash Baruah welcomed the gathering and paid tributes to Das, who was the founder secretary of the organisation.
