Rich tributes paid to Dr Hazarika at Tezpur

TEZPUR, Dec 6 � Rich tributes were paid to the late music legend Dr Bhupen Hazarika at Chandranath Sharma Higher Secondary School near here at a day-long commemoration programme organised in connection with the completion of one month of Sudhakantha�s demise on Monday.

Dr Hazarika�s contributions were recalled by more than 50 organisations attending the occasion from in and outside the Bihaguri area.

In the morning, more than 50 social organisations organised an all-religion prayer. Later, children of the area took part in an art programme to pay tribute to Dr Hazarika. Later, people from every walk of life participated in a cultural programme, which was inaugurated by the principal of Bihaguri HSS, Lalita Devi Goswami.

Prominent educationist Biseswar Sarma also paid floral tribute at the portrait of the legend.

At 2 pm, a special commemoration programme was held under the presidentship of Biseswar Sarma. Attending the programme as guest of honour, Kalaguru Bishnu Prasad Rabha�s son Prithiraj Rabha recalled his close association with Bhupen Hazarika. Prithiraj Rabha recalling the rare talent stated that Dr Hazarika took advice on music from the Kalaguru and tried to gain knowledge on language from Dandinath Kalita while he was a student of Tezpur Government Boys� Higher Secondary School.

Senior journalist Gautom Sarma said that Bhupen Hazarika was not merely an Assamese, he was a pure Indian and a true world citizen. Attending the programme Dr Hazarika�s nephew Rishiraj Hazarika lauded the people for honouring the legend and said that the debate over the Bhupen Hazarika trust is very unfortunate. He urged the people to be concerned with the trust to deal with the same selflessly reflecting the dignity of the music maestro.

A statue of the cultural legend was also unveiled.
