RGs contributions recalled

By Staff reporter

GUWAHATI, Oct 17 The life and contributions of RG Baruah were recalled in a function held on the occasion of his 111th birth anniversary today. Three eminent personalities were also felicitated during the programme organised by the RG Baruah Smriti Rakhya Committee at Kanaklal Barua auditorium of Assam State Museum here.

Speaking on the occasion, noted journalist DN Bezboruah described RG Baruah as a man of rare abilities, which enabled him to dream and achieve in an environment that was quite adverse. In the history of newspapers in Assam, he succeeded in publishing a newspaper that now has a long and distinguished history. This was in stark contrast to many other newspapers which could only be sustained over a short period of time.

It was due to the strong foundations he had laid that The Assam Tribune, could evolve into a dynamic entity that could contribute to the field of journalism. Today, the newspaper and its sister publications were known for the service they rendered to the society.

RG Baruah, in his view, was also remarkable for achieving success in every project that he had conceived. For this, he would be an ideal role model for the youths of this region.

Veteran sports journalist Pulin Das recalled his association with RG Baruah describing it as a profound influence on his life. It was due to his meticulous planning and hard work that Assam came to have a modern stadium in Guwahati. Moreover, many other events of significance could be held in Assam due to his personal initiatives.

Former Vice-Chancellor of Dibrugarh University, Kamaleswar Bora, the president of RG Baruah Smriti Rakhya Committee, in his address mentioned the situation in which RG Baruah carried out his responsibilities in establishing The Assam Tribune in Guwahati.

TG Baruah, chairman of the Assam Tribune Group, remembered RG Baruah as a devoted father, who would celebrate his birthday by caring for the poor and the needy. Although he was committed to his work, his energies were spent in several projects in a range of areas, which benefitted the society.

The function witnessed the felicitation of former Assembly Speaker Sheikh Chand Mohammed, sportsperson Bimal Bharali and photographer Nalinikanta Baruah. They were honoured for bringing laurels to Assam in their respective field of activities.
