Revamped AGP should be for all ethnic groups

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, July 17 Veteran social worker and president of the voluntary organisation Save Guwahati Build Guwahati (SGBG) has said in a statement that the on-going debate over the reshaping of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), a leading regional party of the State, should take into consideration the issues concerning the ethnic groups of the State. The regional party should be a common platform for all the ethnic groups of the State, he said.

This issue should be treated with the same importance that has been attached to the issues of Constitutional safeguard to the indigenous peoples, flood, erosion, etc., he said

Since 1952, a lobby has been working against the interest of the State. It is at the root of the dismemberment of the State into pieces and the State now needs a regional party which can resist such diabolic designs of this lobby, Barua said.

Now, the Western world, particularly the United States, is looking for the markets for its commodities and India is a big market for the Western capitalists. For these capitalists, Assam has become an attractive place for its natural resources. A regional party representing the interest of the State should be able to tackle this situation, too.

Moreover, the issue of funds required for the effective functioning of a regional party should also be considered seriously. Again, the presence of a huge number of armed forces personnel in the State should also be taken seriously in this respect, Barua said.

But in some respects, the effectiveness of a regional party is limited. This should also be considered seriously, he said.
