Resumption of local, suburban trains sought

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, Oct 15 - The Assam Rail Passengers Association (ARPA) today called upon Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal to approach the railway authorities seeking resumption of local and suburban train services in the State.

ARPA members today staged a sit-in protest outside the Kamrup Metro Deputy Commissioners office here against the suspension of local train services in the State.

Later, the APRA handed over a memorandum to a representative of the Kamrup Metro Deputy Commissioner for forwarding it to the Chief Minister.

ARPA secretary Dipankar Sharma said that local trains are the lifeline for crores of people across the country. Local and suburban services are used by thousands of people in Assam, including government employees and small traders, to commute daily and it is much cheaper than other modes of transportation, he added.

In many other states, local train services have been resumed after the state governments concerned took up the matter with the railway authorities. We call upon Chief Minister Sonowal to also take a similar step and approach the railways for the resumption of local and suburban services. People from Bongaigaon, Nalbari, Barpeta and Baihata Chariali, among other places, who travel to and from Guwahati daily, are the worst affected due to the continued suspension of operations.

Resumption of local services in a gradual manner, with adequate health protocols in place, will provide big succour to the people of Assam, Sharma said.

Operations of local and suburban trains have remained suspended since the commencement of the first nationwide lockdown in late March.
