GUWAHATI, June 29 � More than 70 colleges from Assam, Manipur Nagaland and Tripura took part in a unique All North East College Magazine Competition organised by the publication cell of the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM), the results of which were declared today.
The competition was organised in order to encourage young upcoming writers, editors, layout designers of college magazines from across the north-eastern region.
Magazines of College of Veterinary Science, Khanapara, Guwahati, Cotton College, Guwahati, and Doom Dooma College were adjudged as the three best entries in the competition.
Addressing the media here today, Prof PG Rao, Vice Chancellor USTM, said, �USTM is constantly engaged in achieving excellence in the field of education. The university has been organising NE graduate congress for students, as well as congress for teachers and principals every year. From this year, we started this annual college magazine competition to bring about the much-needed improvement in overall quality of our college magazines and encourage the budding writers,� he said.
Dr Alaka Desai Sarma, Dean, student welfare USTM and a member of the jury for the college magazine competition, informed that even though this was the first of its kind competition organised in the region, the response has been very encouraging with more than 70 colleges from the region participating in the competition.
�The quality of our college magazines is improving and with a little bit of guidance and support, they can achieve excellence very easily,� she added.
Nurul Laskar, chairperson of the jury, announced the awards. More than 70 colleges from all over the North-east participated in the competition, among which three best magazines � Vetkol, published by the College of Veterinary Science, Khanapara, Cottonian, published by the Cotton College and Aaikyadeep, published by the Doom Dooma College would be awarded with a desktop computer, memento and certificate each and three other magazines published by Rangia College, Devraj Roy College and Nagaon College will be given consolation prizes.
The winners in other categories are �Best cover page�: College of Veterinary Science, Khanapara; �Best woman editor�: Linamoni Mahan of Moran Girls� College; �Best article: Woman�: Manabata Aaru Manabiya Mulyabodhor Abakhaya by Priyanka Basumatary of B Barooah College; �Best article�: Xatra Nagari Barpetar Doul Utsav: Eti Alokpat by Raktava Kumar Das of B Borooah College.
Special Jury Awards went to Buddha Bhanu College, Shillong, Meghalaya; Immanuel College, Dimapur, Nagaland; Holy Cross College, Agartala, Tripura; Silapather College, Assam; and Al Ajmiatul Islamia, Badarpur, Assam.
The jury praised all the selected writers, editors and layout designers for their creative skills and urged them to relentlessly harness it for their future benefits.
The other members of the jury for selection of the best entries were PJ Baruah, executive editor, The Assam Tribune, Anisul Hoque, managing director, Brand Resonance, and Fiedel War, former chairman of Meghalaya Public Service Commission. The awards will be handed over to the winners at the North East Graduate Congress to be held at USTM on a later date.
