Result will impact State polls: Sonowal

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, May 16 The results of the Lok Sabha polls would have a definite impact in the 2016 Assembly polls in Assam, said the president of the State unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Sarbananda Sonowal.

Talking to The Assam Tribune this afternoon, Sonowal, who himself was elected to the Lok Sabha from Lakhimpur constituency, said that BJP has proved its strength in the grass root level and this would have a definite impact in the next State Assembly polls. However, at the same time, he admitted that the BJP-led government at the Centre would have to perform as per the expectations of the people.

On the reasons for the BJPs victory, Sonowal said that the people of the entire country wanted a change and the situation was no different in Assam. He said that the failure of the Congress-led government in the State in all fronts, including price rise because of the syndicates, deterioration of the law-and-order situation, destruction of the democratic values, etc., helped the BJP in improving its performance.

Sonowal pointed out that since Independence, the Congress was using the tea tribes as its vote bank but did nothing for the welfare of the tribe. The young generations of the tea tribes realized this fact and educated the older generations of the tribe. That is why, the tea tribes voted overwhelmingly for the BJP this time, he added.
