By Correspondent

DHEMAJI, July 5 With improvement in the weather condition, the flood situation in Dhemaji is limping back to normalcy as the river Brahmautra has showed a receding trend over the past three days.

Meanwhile, around 2000 inmates of Sissi and Jorkata areas under Dhemaji revenue circle who were taking shelter in six relief camps at Machkhowa have already returned to their respective homes.

According to official resources, about 35 revenue villages of Sissi, Jorkata and Machkhowa areas under Dhemaji revenue circle have been badly affected by the flood which has breached about 100 metres of the Sissi-Tekeliphuta embankment on June 25 last, thereby creating havoc in the areas.

The district administration of Dhemaji is working round the clock for rescue and relief operation of the marooned people. Food material, including rice, dal and salt have been adequately supplied to them. As informed by Lakshmi Kutum, circle officer of Dhemaji revenue circle 10 tubewells have been installed in the flood-hit areas and 62 more tubewells will be installed within a few days. She also informed that about 3,270 dwelling houses in Sissi and Jorkata areas were damaged out of which 220 are permanent houses and the rest 3,050 were temporary dwellings.

On the otherhand, the overall flood situation in west Dhemaji and Jiadhal, though improved during the last 4 days, has become worse due to rainfall in the foothills of Arunachal Pradesh.

The surging waters of the Jiadhal have submerged more than 30 villages in Jiadhal and west Dhemaji areas. The worst affected villages are Kechukhana Kachari, Kechukhana Koch gaon, Misamari Chapari and a part of Bothadoi gaon. At last 95 per cent of the houses in the area are still inundated.

However, official sources said that all total 5,366 families covering 42,280 population in the current wave of flood under Dhemaji revenue circle were affected and the area under cropland that has been inundated is estimated to be 9,835 hectares.
