SILCHAR, Sept 30 - Condemning the preventive detention of local MLA Dilip Paul, BJP district president Kaushik Rai and other leaders, besides Union Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today said that steps taken by the police was disappointing and uncalled for.
Sonowal, who is in Silchar, told the media �it is disappointing to see that innocent people are being attacked by the police�.
�I have asked the administrative officials and police to ensure safety of the people. They must work as per the people�s expectations.�
Interestingly, against the demand to transfer SP Rajveer Singh raised by the BJP district unit, Sonowal said �Law and order is a State subject. I have asked the DCs and SPs of three districts to take steps to ensure peace and harmony among the people.�
Reacting to the criticisms on the notification issued by the Government to grant citizenship to the Hindu migrants, Sonowal said that the Congress is spreading negative publicity regarding an issue about which the BJP is firmly committed.
The Union Minister said that he will speak to officials of the Railway and Surface Transport Ministry on the issue of delay in starting the passenger train services and also about the deplorable road condition.�
The BJP is committed to speed up the rate of development of Barak Valley,� the Minister said, assuring that people of Silchar should not be disappointed as the second-biggest urban sprawl in North East will surely be included in the list of Smart Cities.
