Republic Day celebrated across State

GUWAHATI, Jan 27 � The 66th Republic Day was celebrated all over the State on Monday. Our correspondents report:

MANGALDAI: The Republic Day was celebrated in Darrang district amid the boycott call by several militant outfits. Basanta Das, State Minister for Fisheries, Water Resources, etc., unfurled the Tricolour at the Kachari Maidan. Manoj Kumar, DC, and Vivek Raj Singh, SP, were present on the occasion.

In his speech, the minister recalled the contributions of Darrang to the freedom movement, politics, culture, literature, medical science, etc., with special reference to the historic Pathorughat Uprising of 1894.

The function featured cultural programmes, exhibition of tableau, felicitation programmes, sports competitions, etc.

NAGAON: Minister Rockybul Hussain unfurled the Tricolour at the central Republic Day function held at the Nurul Amin Stadium in Nagaon. In his address, Hussain recalled the contributions of Mahatma Gandhi and the other freedom fighters. He called upon the extremists to join the mainstream. He also highlighted the achievements of the present Government. A friendly cricket match between DC XI and Nagaon Sports Association XI was also played. Some freedom fighters were felicitated on the occasion.

SILCHAR: The Republic Day was celebrated in Cachar district with patriotic fervour and pomp. In the central function held at the Silchar Police Parade grounds, the Tricolour was unfurled by Sports Minister Ajit Singh.

Addressing the people, Singh said that the State Government is pro-active in restoring peace in Assam. He spoke on the various schemes taken up by the Government, particularly in the education and health sectors. .

A cultural programme and prize distribution ceremony were also held. Mahesh Narayan Das, freedom fighter, was felicitated.

Statues of freedom fighters across the town were illuminated and fruits and sweets distributed among jail inmates on the Republic Day. KM Basavraju, Airport Director, hoisted the flag at the Silchar Airport. Besides government offices, educational institutions, private establishments, sports and cultural organisations and clubs celebrated the day with various activities.

Sivasagar: The Tricolour was hoisted by minister Sarat Borkotoky at the Boarding Field in the Republic Day function in Sivasagar.

Borkotoky said that communal harmony in the Assamese community is a prominent feature. There is no place for communalism in Assam, he added. A friendly cricket match was also organised between the DC XI and Taraka Mancha, Sivasagar, XI.

Besides, the CISF unit, ONGC, Nazira, also celebrated the Republic Day at the ONGC Parade Ground. BK Baruah, ED, ONGC, Assam Asset, hoisted the National Flag on the occasion.

Goalpara: The district administration celebrated the Republic Day amid tight security at the JTC Parade Ground in Goalpara.

Parliamentary Secretary (Irrigation) Illiyas Ali unfurled the Tricolour and inspected the guard of honour. He spoke on the development and welfare schemes of the Government.

A cultural show was also held on the occasion. DC JVN Subramanyam, SP Nitul Gogoi and other senior officials took part in the celebrations. Farmers Upendra Chandra Rabha, Abdul Halim and national award-winning teacher Abdul Majid Khan were felicitated.

HAILAKANDI: The main Republic Day function was organised at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Stadium in Hailakandi by the district administration. Parliamentary Secretary Monilal Goala hoisted the Tricolour. In his address, Goala remembered the contributions of the freedom fighters. Former minister and Katlicherra MLA Gautam Roy was also present in the function.

KOKRAJHAR: The Republic Day was celebrated at Kokrajhar with a daylong programme. BTC chief Hagrama Mohilary unfurled the Tricolour at the Govt HS & MP School playground. Mohilary said that a vested circle was trying to disturb the peace in the BTC area and appealed to all people to remain united. He also condemned the recent attacks by NDFB(S) ultras and welcomed the Government�s action to root out terrorist groups.

Earlier, the BTC chief took the guard of honour and distributed awards and citations among beneficiaries.

NALBARI: The Republic Day was celebrated at the Nalbari SP Office playground. Dr Bhumidhar Barman, Minister of Revenue and Rehabilitation, hoisted the Tricolour at the central function. Defying the boycott call given by ULFA and other militant outfits, thousands of people turned up for the function organised by the Nalbari district administration.

In his speech, Dr Barman recalled the contributions of the freedom fighters. On the occasion, a cultural programme was also held at the Nalbari Natya Mandir, which was inaugurated by Deputy Commissioner Dr Om Prakash.

UDALGURI: Educational institutions, government and non-government offices, NGOs and political parties celebrated the Republic Day in Udalguri district by hoisting the Tricolour on their respective premises.

The Tricolour was hoisted by Sadhana Hojai, Deputy Commissioner of Udalguri, at the parade ground. She outlined the welfare schemes of the Government in her speech.

MORIGAON: The Republic Day was observed at the Tarun Ram Phukan playground in Morigaon. The National Flag was hoisted by Jon Jonali Boruah, Parliamentary Secretary, Urban Development Department, Government of Assam.

In her address, Boruah spoke on the development schemes being implemented by the State Government. Earlier, she offered floral tributes on the statue of Mahatma Gandhi at the Gandhi Bhawan.

DIPHU: The Republic Day was celebrated in Karbi Anglong district amid the 24-hour Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao bandh called by the KPLT. The main function was held at the Karbi Anglong Sports Association Stadium in Diphu. The Tricolour was hoisted by Hills Area Development Minister Kharsing Engti. The day was also celebrated in every block office.

Tezpur: The Republic Day was centrally celebrated in Sonitpur district at the Church Field in Tezpur. Sarat Saikia, Parliamentary Secretary, Finance, Government of Assam, unfurled the Tricolour. Saikia urged all the rebel groups active in the region to join the peace process. Earlier, he received the guard of honour presented by the SSB, Assam Police, Home Guards, ITBP, Assam Rifles, NCC, etc. Due to the Model Code of Conduct in view of the municipal and town committee elections, scheduled for February 9, programmes like felicitation of prominent persons were cancelled.

Namrup: At the Assam Petrochemicals Limited in Namrup, the National Tricolour was unfurled by its Managing Director, Ratul Bordoloi. At the BVFCL, the National Flag was hoisted by its CMD, SD Singh at the Gandhi Field. At the NTPS, the Tricolour was unfurled by its General Manager, Arpan Saikia. Educational institutions located in and around Namrup also celebrated the Republic Day.

Digboi: At Digboi, the National Flag was hoisted by Rameswar Dhanowar, local MLA, at the Jubilee Ground. In his speech, Dhanowar paid homage to the martyrs of the Freedom Movement. He also inspected the guard of honour. At Margherita, the celebrations were held at the Central Field. The Tricolour was hoisted by Adil Khan, SDO (Civil) of Margherita subdivision.

At Digboi College, the National Tricolour was hoisted by Dr Dip Saikia, principal of the college.

Biswanath Chariali: The Republic Day was celebrated at Biswanath Chariali and Gohpur in Sonitpur district. The National Tricolour was unfurled at the Parade Ground by Pallav Gopal Jha, SDO (C), Biswanath. It was followed by the guard of honour. The MLA of Biswanath LAC, Prabin Kumar Hazarika, the chairman of Biswanath Municipal Board, Dilip Kumar Baruah, Biswanath SP Manabendra Devroy, former minister and social worker Dr Kosheswar Borah, Circle Officer, Biswanath, Tripurendra Pator and others were present on the occasion.

At Gohpur, the SDO (C), Gohpur, Sanjay Dutta hoisted the flag. Successful farmers, Anganwadi and ASHA workers, meritorious students and others were felicitated.

KALAIGAON: Dina Moni Das, Circle Officer, Kalaigaon Revenue Circle, hoisted the Tricolour at the Gandhi Bakori Field in Kalaigaon. The Kalaigaon Police offered salute to the Tricolour. Cultural events were also organised by the students of Kalaigaon schools.

JONAI: Defying the boycott call militant outfits, the Republic Day was celebrated in Jonai subdivision with enthusiasm. Unfurling the National Flag at the Gandhi Maidan, Jonai SDO (C) Atul Sharma mentioned the various development projects initiated by the State Government.

He took the guard of honour presented by the troupes of the AP Bn, NCC, Scouts & Guides and schoolchildren.

RAHA: Defying the boycott call by ULFA (I) and NDFB (S), the Republic Day was celebrated on Monday at Raha. The Circle Officer of Raha, Manoj Kumar Sakaria unfurled the Tricolour before taking the salute of the march past at the Sudhakantha Dr Bhupen Hazarika playground.

Hiranya Narayan Bora , social activist and ex-principal, Raha HS School, local artist Santaram Das and folklorist Lokeswar Gogoi were felicitated in the function.

DERGAON : The Republic Day was celebrated with enthusiasm at Dergaon. The Tricolour was unfurled by Dergaon Circle Officer Jitu Das at the central programme held at the Naren Sarmah Memorial Field. Das urged everybody to maintain peace and harmony.

Earlier, freedom fighter Ganesh Hazarika initiated the smriti tarpan programme. Dergaon MLA Arati Hazarika Kachari urged the gathering to take part in nation-building activities. Retired Director-grade scientist of the NEIST (formerly RRL) Dr Choudhury Nath Saikia was felicitated.

The Republic Day was also celebrated at the Police Training Complex. The National Flag was hoisted by Satyaraj Hazarika, Commandant of the Battalion Training Centre (BTC) and principal in-charge of the Police Training College at the BTC and PTC.

DIBRUGARH: The Republic Day was celebrated at Dibrugarh University. The entire campus resounded with patriotic songs played through the public address system. The Tricolour was unfolded by Prof Alak Kumar Buragohain, Vice Chancellor.

In his address, Prof Buragohain recalled the contributions of national leaders in the post-Independence era. .

BADARPUR: The Republic Day was celebrated throughout Badarpur with enthusiasm. Several functions were held by different clubs and organisations, schools and colleges, shops and business establishments, etc. The main functions of the Badarpur Railway and civil town were held on the Badarpur Railway Manager Office premises and Badarpur NC College playground, where the Tricolours were hoisted by the NF Railway Badarpur Assistant Commercial Manager and i/c Railway Area Manager of Badarpur, Hari Dayal Sarkar and the Badarpur Circle Officer, AR Mazumder respectively.

The NF Railway Badarpur Employees and Mazdoor Unions, Badarpur Railway Institute, Badarpur Railway SC-ST Associations, Badarpur Railway HS School and Badarpur Nabin Chandra College also celebrated the day. .

On the other hand, the main function at Karimganj was held at the Government Higher Secondary School playground, where the National Flag was hoisted by minister Girindra Mallik. Mallik appealed to all sections of people to maintain peace and unity for successful implementation of development schemes.

Lumding: The Republic Day was celebrated at Lumding with the National Flag hoisted by Ananta Gogoi, magistrate, Sankardev Nagar, at the Shahid Field.

DUDHNOI: The Republic Day celebrations were organised jointly by the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council (RHAC) and the local administration at the Dudhnoi Public Playground. Unfurling the Tricolour, Tankeswar Rabha, Chief Executive Member, RHAC, called upon the people to cooperate in the development of the council. Sambhu Ram Rabha and Lakhi Kanta Fenang were awarded by the council for their contributions, while four sports personalities Jitul Rabha, Mintu Rabha, Deuli Rabha and Nakul Boro were felicitated on the occasion, a press release stated.
