GUWAHATI, April 20 � To create a greater level of awareness about the need of a repatriation treaty between India and Bangladesh and to ensure proper deportation of the illegal migrants, the Axom Jatiya Gana Sangram Parishad has decided to create a national level mass campaign among the policy makers, think tanks and media on the issue.
The Parishad, which has been trying to find out a legal way out to deport the infiltrators, is of the view that a repatriation treaty is the only workable solution for deportation of illegal migrants.
Alleging that despite the court orders regarding deportation of illegal migrants, no action has been taken to execute such orders, the Parishad has also decided to take legal recourse on the matter in the days to come.
A booklet on repatriation treaty has been published and would be distributed by the Parishad among the MLAs and MPs of Assam, intellectuals, policy makers, students� unions, editors of newspapers and other media houses.
�The level of awareness on this issue has been very low, as it involves international law, and even most of the people who deliberate on expulsion of foreigners, Assam Accord and speak on the related issues on public forums etc., know very little about the need to have such a treaty, without which the entire exercise would be futile,� said Dr Aroop Jyoti Kalita, chief convener of the Axom Jatiya Gana Sangram Parishad.
�With the booklet, that contains articles and other necessary details specifying the need for such a treaty, we would also approach the policy makers at the national level and the national media houses for a wider focus on the issue. Back home, we would also distribute this booklet that contains articles in both English and Assamese, in the colleges among the students and teaching community to build up a mass campaign,� added Kalita.
�Even the White Paper on Foreigner�s Issue published on October 20, 2012 by Home and Political Department, Government of Assam states that in the absence of a proper laid down procedure for deportation of illegal migrants between the Government of India and the Government of Bangladesh, it has become difficult to carry out deportations. But unfortunately, the focus is still not on inking the right accord that would legitimise the deportation of detected infiltrators,� he added.
