Remand of blast accused extended

GUWAHATI, May 27 - The Court of Judicial Magistrate (First Class), Kamrup (Metro) today extended the remand period for Pranmoy Rajguru and Jahnabi Saikia, accused in the recent grenade blast in Guwahati, by four days.

Both the accused were today reproduced before the court on the expiry of the initial police custody period of ten days.

Investigators sought the extension of police custody for both the accused to facilitate reconstruction of the crime scene and for recovery of more arms and ammunition, apart from arresting other ULFA cadres, who could be involved in the blast.

Appearing for Jahnabi Saikia, defence counsels Bhaskar Dev Konwar, MK Brown and Sanjana Newar, however argued before the court against the concept of reconstruction of crime scene, terming it an alien concept in the Indian criminal justice system.

The court further directed the investigating officer not to torture the accused persons and to ensure that they receive proper food, clothing and medical attention.�

�The accused persons have to be examined by a medical practitioner every 24 hours and the IO is to comply with the directions laid down by the Supreme Court in the case of DK Basu -vs- The State of West Bengal which contains the guidelines to be followed in respect of persons under detention,� the court ruled.

Meanwhile, the court appointed advocate Rakesh Sharma to legally represent ULFA cadre Bijoy Asom, another accused in the case, as he was not represented by any counsel.
