Relic of Don Bosco to arrive today

GUWAHATI, May 28 � The sacred remains of St. Jhon Bosco (1815-88), on a five- continent pilgrimage, will be received here on May 29, and then continue on its pilgrimage to the various centers of the Salesian province of Guwahati, comprising the States of Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Tripura.

�Don Bosco Institute, Kharghuli is organising a programme to pay tribute to the St John Bosco, popularly known as Don Bosco on May 30 at 4.30 pm�in the Don Bosco Institute in Kharghuli, here,� Father VM Thomas of the DBI, Guwahati said while addressing a press conference here on Friday.

�A sacred relic is an object of the religious veneration. The relic of Saint John Bosco is being brought to our region so that it may bring blessings to the people and also serve as an inspiration to all those working on behalf of youth,� he added.

The bones of the right hand of St. John Bosco are encased in a life size wax replica of the saint, which is enclosed in a glass casket mounted on a mobile wood and steel stand. This pilgrim journey began on April 25, 2009 from Valdocco, Turin, Italy, which is the �Motherhouse of the Don Bosco Society�. The date marks the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Don Bosco Society-Salesian Society. This pilgrimage is also meant to mark the bicentenary of the birth of Don Bosco on August 16, 2015.

St. John Bosco, who spent his life caring for thousands of youngsters in the industrial city of Turin, educating them and setting them on their feet, has been acclaimed as the father and friend of youth. He was declared as saint of the Catholic Church on April 1, 1934. In 1988, Pope John Paul II declared him as the father, friend and educator of youth.
