Release of anti-dam protesters demanded

DIBRUGARH, Dec 28 � Several organisations here today jointly staged a demonstration near Chowkidinghee ground in protest against the police action and subsequent arrest of a few anti-dam protestors in Lakhimpur district.

Local youth bodies, led by the Asam Jatyatabadi Yuva Parishad, Tai Ahom Students� Union and Mottock Yuva Chatra Sanmilan, demanded unconditional release of those arrested and called upon the Chief Minister to initiate a dialogue with the leaders of the protesting organisations to find a permanent solution. The demonstrators squatted for about two hours and dispersed later.

Our Jorhat Correspondent adds: The Jorhat district committee of the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba-Chatra Parishad today staged a demonstration in front of the DC�s office here, protesting against the �police atrocities� on anti-dam protesters in Lakhimpur district on December 25. The AJYCP members also sent a memorandum to the Chief Minister through the Jorhat DC, demanding a proper inquiry into the incident

Siba Kalita, president of the Jorhat district AJYCP unit, alleged that the State Government has become an agent of the companies based outside the State.
