Red Cross Day observed

GUWAHATI, May 8 � World Red Cross Day, observed on May 8 every year to pay homage to the founder of the Red Cross Movement, Nobel Laureate, Jean Henry Dunant, was observed by the Indian Red Cross Society, Assam State Branch also with a daylong programme, said a press release.

The programme started with flag hoisting and floral tribute to Henry Dunant by Renuka Devi Barkataki, chairman, Indian Red Cross Society, Assam State Branch. After that a long procession was taken out in the city. Several students of Red Cross Nurses Training Centre, Junior Red Cross unit of Guwahati Public School, TC Girls School, Kamrup Academy, Angels of God HS School, Adarsh HS School etc., took part in the procession.

Addressing an auspicious gathering in the conference hall of Red Cross Hospital, Chandmari, Smt Barkataki highlighted the impact of the Red Cross Society and its relentless humanitarian activities.

At the beginning noted artiste Sadhan Chakrabarty sang a devotional song. The distinguished personalities present at the meeting included Ajoy Dutta, ex-MLA and executive member, Red Cross Society, Assam and Minati Choudhury, vice chairman, Red Cross Assam.

Later, a delegation headed by Smt Barkataki went to the Governor�s House and felicitated the Governor with the World Red Cross Day badge. The Governor is also president of the Red Cross, Assam State Branch.
