Recovery of body sparks protests in Manipur

IMPHAL, March 20 � Recovery of a missing Manipur driver�s body has sparked public protests. The incident has also created tension in Thongju area in the State for the second day today.

Twenty eight year old Thokchom Kiran alias Naoba of Koirou Mamang Leikai in Imphal West district had left home after two persons namely Md Sabir, a Village Defence Force personnel and Md Salim, a rifleman of Manipur Rifles approached him to take a patient to hospital in former�s Tata Iris taxi on March 14.

Since then, the whereabouts of the driver was not known. But all of a sudden, his �decomposed� dead body was recovered from a fish farm of one Md Rajauddin, who is said to be a relative of Md Salim at Phoubakchao Konuma area under Mayang Imphal police station yesterday afternoon.

Angry locals mostly women blocked the busy Indo-Myanmar Road at Thongju area, 5 km south of Imphal, demanding immediate punishment to the involved persons.

The agitation was intensified today with the angry locals calling a total bandh forcing closure of educational institutions and Kakwa and Lamlong markets.

The agitators have urged the Chief Minister O Ibobi to bring justice in the killing.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister while inaugurating a SBI branch at Saitu-Gamphazol area in Senapati district this morning has appealed to the people to remain calm as the government is taking up necessary steps by rounding up two persons in connection with the incident. One more person said to be involved in the incident is absconding.
