GUWAHATI, June 12 - City-based Down Town Hospital today said that a team of doctors from the hospital headed by Dr SA Wadood and Dr PKD Phukan recently performed a difficult surgery.
In a statement, the hospital said that a 35 year old male patient was admitted recently following a bullet injury during the police firing at a protest against hydel dams at Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh.
�He had sustained a bullet injury with entry wound at the right upper abdomen just below the rib cage, with extensive liver laceration, diaphragmatic injury, lung contusion in the right side of the lung and hemopneumothorax. He had received initial treatment at the local Military hospital where a chest tube was placed in the right pleural space,� said the statement.
On arrival the patient was resuscitated in the emergency along with evaluation of the extent of injury.
�The bullet had entered just near the tip of the right ninth rib, through the right lower lung and the right lobe of the liver. It broke through the ninth rib at the back and had lodged in the muscles on the right side of the ninth and tenth spine. Following resuscitation and evaluation the patient was taken up for emergency surgery. A chevron incision was used to access the abdomen,� it said.
The statement added, �As the bullet was located near the ninth and tenth spine with the help of intra-operative X-ray and removed with an incision. It was a complex surgery due to the location of the bullet and the critical condition of the patient. The whole operation took around five hours.�
Post operatively the patient was kept in the ICU for few days and subsequently in the ward.
�He was discharged on the twelfth post operative day. The patient had come for follow up and he was doing fine and had resumed his normal activities,� the hospital added.
