GUWAHATI, Dec 7 - Deepankar (Deep) Medhi, Curators� Distinguished Professor in the Department of Computer Science & Electrical Engineering at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC), USA has been named a Fellow of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). He is being recognised as a Fellow for his scientific contributions to �optimization and the design of computer-communication networks� in the �Research Engineer/Scientist� category. Medhi is believed to be the first Assamese to be recognised as an IEEE Fellow in the �Research Engineer/Scientist� category. This was stated in a press release.
The IEEE Grade of Fellow is conferred by the IEEE Board of Directors on a person with an outstanding record of accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest after a rigorous nomination and selection process. The total number selected in any one year cannot exceed one-tenth of one-percent of the total voting membership. IEEE Fellow is the highest grade of membership and is recognised by the technical community as a prestigious honour and an important career achievement.

Through its 400,000 plus members in 160 countries, the association is a leading authority on a wide variety of areas ranging from aerospace systems, computers and telecommunications to biomedical engineering, electric power and consumer electronics.
Dr Medhi, who hails from Guwahati, completed his HSLC from Cotton Collegiate HS School and his BSc (Hons) in Mathematics from Cotton College. He studied at St Stephen�s College, Delhi for his MSc degree in Mathematics from the University of Delhi. He then went to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA for his MS and Ph D degrees in Computer Science.
He joined the AT&T Bell Laboratories in 1987 as a member of technical staff and worked on routing and design of computer-communication networks, where he first found his true research interest in this area. He joined UMKC in 1989 where he has been since then. He was awarded the 2012 NT Veatch Award for Distinguished Research and Creative Activity, UMKC�s highest research award given annually to a single faculty member. He is also an honorary professor in the Computer Science & Engineering Department at IIT-Guwahati.
Dr Medhi has co-authored two highly regarded books, Routing, Flow, and Capacity Design in Communication and Computer Networks (2004) and Network Routing: Algorithms, Protocols, and Architectures (1st edition, 2007; 2nd Edition, 2017), both published by Elsevier Science. In addition, he has published over 170 scientific papers.
Dr Medhi is the eldest son of late Prof Jyotiprasad Medhi and Prity Medhi of Guwahati.
