Ranking TT tourney inaugurated

GUWAHATI, Nov 1 - The 3rd Nagen Hazarika and 7th RG Baruah Assam State Major Ranking Table Tennis Tournament and the 64th DONIC Sitaram Agarwala Inter District and State Table Tennis Championship got under way at the Desbhakta Tarun Ram Phookan Indoor Stadium here today.

State Transport and Agriculture Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary was the chief guest in the inaugural function. Kanchan Hazarika, wife of Nagen Hazarika; Tridip Sarma, grandson of RG Baruah and Madalasa Hazarika Baruah, former international table tennis player were also present as guests.

Assam Table Tennis Association secretary Tridib Duvarah welcoming the gathering described the present scenario of table tennis in the State and the organisation�s effort in uplifting the standard of the game.

Inaugurating the championship, Patowary recalled the contribution of RG Baruah in building modern Assam. Explaining about the role of Dainik Asom and The Assam Tribune during the 1971 India-Pakistan war he said, people of those days eagerly waited for these two papers in the morning and he preserved all the issues of that period. He further revealed that The Assam Tribune is the only newspaper from the Northeast that reaches Prime Minister�s table daily.

Remembering Nagen Hazarika�s endeavour in inculcating the spirit of nationalism in Assam, Patowary said Hazarika had the courage to boldly explain in detail about all the problems of Assam before the national leaders in Delhi during meetings.

He urged all the youngsters to play sincerely and be good human resources in order to build a strong nation.
