GUWAHATI, May 31 - Bibungsar Basumatary of Barpeta Road Bodo High School today became the first student of a Bodo medium school to secure a rank in the High School Leaving Certificate examination.
A permanent resident of Karemura of Barbari in Baksa, Bibungsar got the joint tenth rank with seven others scoring 580 marks out of 600. He is the son of Bakul Chandra Basumatary and Anjima Basumatary. He got letter marks in all the six subjects, including Bodo and Advanced Mathematics (elective).
Nurturing a dream to be a civil servant, he now wishes to pursue his higher secondary in science from a college at Barama. �I studied for 9-10 hours a day,� the shy student added.
�He had been a meritorious student all along. He used to top the talent search examinations conducted by the ABSU at high school level,� Bibungsar�s school head Bikan Goyari said over telephone.
Bibungsar�s school Upendra National Academy is a private school and established in the year 2002. As the school is not yet recognised, the students appear in the exam from Barpeta Road Bodo High School.
The All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) has announced a cash award of Rs 50,000 to Bibungsar. The students� body will also bear his educational expenses from now on.
�We had declared the award in 2006. That year, only 66 students from Bodo medium schools got first division marks. As a result of our efforts, in 2016, the number of first division holders jumped to 1,174 and this year it went further up to 1,352,� ABSU president Pramod Boro told The Assam Tribune.
Bodo medium schools were first set up in the year 1963. There are around 700 Bodo medium high schools in the State today.
