By STAFF Reporter

GUWAHATI, Oct 6 Ramleela was celebrated at a function at the Nehru Stadium here on the occasion of the Vijaya Dashami by the Asom Vijayadashami Mahotsava Samiti on October 4 in a befitting manner.

The celebration started with the lighting of the ceremonial lamps near the portrait of late RG Baruah, who was the main architect of the Ramleela celebration at the Nehru Stadium, which started about 40 years back, said Mahotsava Samiti president Ram Niranjan Goenka.

Addressing the function as the chief guest, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said that to kill atrocious Ravana, Rama organised Durga Puja. Death of Ravana brought peace back to Lanka, he said.

The function presided over by Ram Niranjan Goenka was also addressed by Auniati Sattradhikar Dr Pitambar Dev Goswami and Mahotsava Samiti chairman Kanak Sen Deka.

This was followed by the staging of the Ram Leela play on the make-shift stage erected on the stadium ground on the occasion. Then the fire-works of Barpeta and Sivkashi were displayed. The celebration ended with the burning of the 60-feet tall effigy of Ravana, along with the effigies of Kumbhakarna and Indrajit, Goenka said.
