Rally in Agartala to protest journalist killing

AGARTALA, Sept 22 - Thousands of people took out a rally to protest against the killing of journalist Santanu Bhowmik, who was brutally killed in West Tripura�s Mandai area on September 20.

CPI (M) State secretary Bijan Dhar , BJP MLA Asish Saha and senior Congress leader Harekrishna Bhowmik also joined the rally.

The silent rally, which was kicked off from Agartala Press Club ended at the same place by covering all important streets of the capital town.

Senior journalists from various newspapers took part in the rally demanding strong punishment against the culprits involved in the brutal killing.

Police have already arrested two suspected killers but others still remain at large putting a question mark on the police role.

Although there is no fresh violence in trouble-torn Jirania subdivision, Assam Rifles jawans have already begun operations in vulnerable pockets. In some areas, prohibitory order has remained in place as part of precautionary measures.

Keeping in mind of growing subversive activities of IPFT supporters, Chief Minister Manik Sarkar held a high - level meeting with the top security officials yesterday.

Chief Secretary Sanjeev Ranjan, DGP AK Sukla and top officials of Assam Rifles, BSF and CRPF joined the meeting where overall law and order situation was reviewed.

In the meeting, the Chief Minister stressed that the law enforcement agencies must deliver to maintain peace and tranquility in the state.
