Rally calls for peace in Eastern Nagaland

By Bhadra Gogoi

DIMAPUR, Oct 4 - Protesting against the recent clashes and unrest in the Eastern Nagaland Peoples Organisation (ENPO) jurisdiction particularly under Nokalk sub-division of Mon district, thousands of people, including school students, turned up for a peace rally at Noklak town on Friday.

Organised by Khiamniungan Tribal Council (KTC) and led by ENPO, the rally called for maintaining peace and tranquility especially in Khiamniungan region where there had been clashes between security forces and Naga underground groups since May last.

Various leaders at the rally condemned the spate of violence that erupted under ENPO jurisdiction despite adoption of several resolutions that disapproved of violence. They expressed their displeasure with both security forces and Naga underground groups for violating the December 18, 2007 ENPO resolution which resolved that there should not be any bloodshed, threat, intimidation or any form of violence within ENPO jurisdiction. They maintained that violence has hampered developmental activities and academic career of thousands of students, thereby creating a fear psychosis in the mind of innocent public.

Therefore, the leaders at the rally urged both the security forces and underground factions to respect each other and avoid clashes in ENPO jurisdiction.

Meanwhile, the much awaited I Love My Mon Town mission was launched in Mon on Friday. Mon District Planning and Development Board chairman and chief patron of the mission N Thongwang Konyak implored upon the citizens of the town to collectively and tirelessly render their services to revive the town for better living.
