Rallies demand opening of Manipur University

By Correspondent

IMPHAL, Aug 6 - Public rallies were staged today demanding opening of the Manipur University in the interest of the students in the State.

The rallies were held in Imphal town, Bishnupur and Thoubal district headquarters. Student bodies in the district headquarters of Churachandpur, Senapati and Ukhrul also organised rallies braving the seasonal downpours.

The academic activities at Manipur University have been severely affected since May 30 after Manipur University Students Union (MUSU) launched an indefinite strike demanding removal of Vice Chancellor Prof AP Pandey over allegations of financial and administrative irregularities.

Police fired tear gas shells to pacify a situation arising out of the days rally and ongoing agitation by university community near the main gate of the University around 12 noon, sources said.
