Rajya Sabha adjourned over Gujarat Lokayukta row

By The Assam Tribune

NEW DELHI, Sept 6 (IANS): The Rajya Sabha was again adjourned Tuesday as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) continued to raise the issue of the Gujarat governor appointing Lokayukta without consulting the Narendra Modi-led government.

The BJP members took up the issue as soon as the house met for question hour. They trooped close to Chairman Hamid Ansari's podium, forcing him to adjourn the house till 12 noon.

Proceedings in the upper house were stalled Monday and last week Friday as well on the issue.

The BJP, which is the ruling party in Gujarat, has been upset over the appointment of the Lokayukta by Governor Kamla Beniwal, bypassing the state government, and has kicked up a row over it.

Beniwal appointed retired high court judge, Justice R.A. Mehta, as the state Lokayukta, bypassing the state government. The Gujarat government has challenged the decision in the high court. The post had been lying vacant for seven years.
