NEW DELHI, Aug 21 - A day after Centre called for a detailed report from the State government on the damage caused by floods in Assam, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh today reviewed the flood situation in the State and assured all Central assistance for rescue and relief operations.

Official sources said Singh called Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, who briefed him about the floods which affected people in 13 districts.

Central and State agencies are carrying out relief and rescue operations. I have assured the Chief Minister of all possible assistance from the Centre to help the people in flood-affected areas of the State, Singh told newsmen.

As reported, Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Sarbananda Sonowal yesterday called on the Union Home Minister and sought his intervention. He called for Central assistance in relief and rehabilitation of the flood-affected people.

He said in a statement that the Centre was waiting for a preliminary report from the State government in form of a memorandum about the damages caused by the floods and assistance required from the Centre.

He said that it was difficult for the Centre to act unilaterally unless the State government approaches it seeking help.
