By Staff reporter

GUWAHATI, April 15 A sudden downpour preceded by strong winds and thunderstorm played spoilsport for Bihu-goers in many venues in the city. Performances had to be stopped at some venues and crowds moved away to take shelter in adjacent places.

The rains started around seven in the evening and continued uninterrupted for a long time. Strong winds were also reported which added to the inconvenience of people in and around the venues.

Substantial damage to electrical lines and the sound systems were caused by wind and rain at the Pub-Guwahati Bihu Sanmilan. According to Sanjib Kumar Lahkar, president of the Bihu committee, the programme for paying tribute to late Dr Bhupen Hazarika could not start because of strong winds and rain.

In Guwahati Bihu Sanmilani, the oldest stage venue in Assam, a programme was halted midway to ensure safety of people. The roof of the stage was damaged and repairs were carried out. Backup generators had to be pressed into service when electricity supply was disrupted, according to Kailash Sarma of the Bihu Sanmilani.

Some other venues also witnessed damage to hoardings and banners.
