Rains bring bounty for BPL man at Naduar

By Correspondent

JAMUGURIHAT, Feb 13 The story of a patients wait for more than 12 years by a below poverty level (BPL) person under Naduar Anchalik Panchayat has recently come to light.

Kunja Bharali, a very poor resident having only a dilapidated thatched hut over a very small plot of land at Dhekerigaon here received a cheque for Rs 48,000 as the cost of his house under Indira Awas Yojana. He had applied for this benefit due to him when his fist girl child was 1 year old. Today the same girl is an HSLC candidate.

Interestingly, he got his house not for the benevolence of the panchayat member of Uttar Borbhagia Gaon Panchayat, of which he is a resident, but with the help from a totally different quarter. A film director, cultural worker and book publisher Surya Hazarika had visited Dhekerigaon for the location shoot of his TV serial Nodi Boi Jai and used the worn out hut of Kunja Bharali for the purpose.

A sudden shower had put him in great trouble then as his camera and other equipment got wet because of the leaking roof of the hut. Taking into consideration the sorry plight of Kunja Bharali, Surya Hazarika asked the local artistes to arrange for a IAY house in consultation with the BDO of Naduar.

As a result Kunja got a cheque of Rs 48,000 for construction of his IAY house. Today, he is busy in constructing his dream pacca house and decided to christen it Kunja Kutir. He expressed his gratitude to Surya Hazarika, for whose benevolence he got the house.

Kunja Bharali is an example of deprivation in Naduar, as the corrupt panchayat representatives perennially dupe the poor beneficiaries. It is alleged that government benefit meant for the poor are often given to rich, well-to-do persons by taking bribes from them and BPL people are deprived from their due.
