Railways initiative to enhance safety

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Feb 14 - As part of its initiative to enhance safety, the Railways has developed a web-based platform called Safety Information Management System (SIMS).

All-out efforts are being undertaken to ensure safety in rail operation as per directive of the Railway Minister. As part of the initiative the Ministry of Railways has developed the-web based platform called SIMS to further emphasise the need for safety first culture, said an official statement issued by Maligaon-headquartered Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR).

The statement added, As part of the initiative, staff are encouraged as well as rewarded for voluntary disclosure of any unsafe practices or occurrences. For voluntary reporting, the required confidentiality is maintained so as to encourage employees to voluntarily report safety hazards, safety risks, potential hazardous conditions, unsafe practices and inadvertent errors. There is also provision to upload images or a document while reporting safety hazards.

On the SIMS home page, a hyperlink is available under Voluntary Safety Reporting through which an employee can report any unsafe practices or occurrences either in the form of a confidential report or anonymous report.

In both cases, on submitting the hazard information, the system will automatically generate a unique 13-digit hazard ID and the status of the action taken report can also be viewed by the hazard reporting employee through the hyperlink Hazard Status, said the NFR statement.

The chief safety officer of each zonal railway will act as a nodal officer of the system, and will forward the matter to the department/division concerned or the Railway Board for necessary action.
