Rail passengers plea to Centre

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, April 12 The Assam Rail Passengers Association (ARPA) has called upon the BJP-led NDA regime at the Centre to fast-track the double-tracking work in the State as also in the north-eastern region.

Dipankar Sharma, ARPA general secretary, said that despite repeated assurances in the run-up to last years Lok Sabha polls to upgrade infrastructure facility in the region, the BJP-led regime had failed to act since coming to power in New Delhi.

Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu will be in the city on April 13. We call upon the Minister to act proactively with regard to undertaking double-tracking work in the region, he said.

Prabhu will arrive here tomorrow to attend the 60th Railway Week National Awards Function 2015 at IIT-Guwahati.

Sharma also said that passenger services in the newly converted Lumding-Silchar section should be started immediately.

Besides, steps should be taken immediately for regrouping of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR). NFR should be responsible only for the North-east. The areas of West Bengal falling under NFR should be merged with the Eastern Railway and those of Bihar with the East Central Railway, he said.
