Rahul addresses poll rallies in State

By Correspondent

KAMPUR, April 5 Rahul Gandhi, general secretary of All India Congress Committee who was today on an election tour to Kochua, an interior area under Raha LAC, was accorded a rousing reception by tens of thousands of rural people.

People of Raha and Barhampur made a bee line for Kochua Higher Secondary playground since early morning to have a glimpse of Rahul, the charismatic young Congress leader. Noticeably, no star campaigner has so far visited Raha or Barhampur LAC in the run-up to the general election.

In his brief speech Rahul highly lauded the Tarun Gogoi government for ushering in continuous and meaningful development of the state. The unique schemes for poverty alleviation under Tarun Gogoi government were indeed a great relief for the poorer sections of the people, he said.

Referring to the weak governance during the AGP era Rahul pointed out that there was no worthwhile developmental work. He appealed to the people to vote for Congress for the prosperous and united Assam.

The meeting was attended among others by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, Bhubaneswar Kalita, president of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, Rockybul Hussain, Forest and Tourism Minister, Nazrin Faruque, MP and Pijush Hazarika, Congress candidate for Raha LAC.

Tarun Gogoi in his speech recalled the dark days which the people of Assam experienced during the AGP era. He claimed that the Congress government had ensured all round development and brought about peace and harmony among the people.

Our Tezpur Correspondent adds from Mazbat: Whenever we run a government we work for the benifit of the poor people by adopting schemes for the benifit of the people, said Rahul Gandhi addressing an election rally at Mazbat in Udalguri district under BTAD today.

The young leader said that their aim was to take the country forward, for which the poor must be empowered. Based on that the UPA government which came to power in 2004 adopted various schemes for the benefit of the people. He slammed the AGP for scrapping people-oriented schemes like old age pension, widow pension and distribution of rice at subsidised rate to the poor people, during its tenure.
