Rabha students threaten stir

GOALPARA, Jan 30 � One Akon Rabha, cultural secretary of All Rabha Students Union (ARSU) of Goalpara district, was seriously injured when some unidentified motorcycle-borne miscreants attacked him with blunt weapons, iron rods and sharp weapons at his house at Salpara, Krishnai under Krishnai police station. The incident took place around 10.30 pm on January 24.

According to Jibon Rabha, secretary of the ARSU, the miscreants broke open the door of his house and then assaulted him in front of his family members and even threatened him with dire consequences and fired in the air with their 9 mm pistol before fleeing. In this regard, an empty shell was recovered from the place of the incident.

According to eyewitnesses, there were eight persons who had covered their faces with black cloth to hide their identity. Akon Rabha is now recuperating at the Dudhnoi PHC and his condition is said to be stable. A case has been registered with the Krishnai police station in this regard.

In another incident, Raghunath Rabha, finance secretary of ARSU, was threatened with on January 24 through a SMS from a mobile phone.

According to the officer-in-charge of Dudhnoi police station, Prabhat Bora, the owner of the mobile number has been identified but his whereabouts are not known and police is investigating the matter. Till the filing of this report, no arrest was made in connection with both the incidents.

Meanwhile, the ARSU has condemned such attacks on its members and demanded of the district administration to take immediate action to identify and punish those involved in such incidents. It further warned that if no immediate action is taken by the Government, it will have no option but to take recourse to democratic means of protest in the coming days.
