GOALPARA, June 22 - Kalaguru Bishnu Prasad Rabha, the great artist, poet and icon, was paid deep homage at a function organised by the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), Goalpara district committee, at Gandhi Bhawan here on the occasion of Rabha Divas on Tuesday.

The function started with the rendition of his stirring song, Biswar chhande chhande, in the form of a chorus by a womens group. The keynote speech was delivered by noted writer and journalist Ratna Bharali Talukdar who eloquently spoke on the multifaceted personality of Rabha.

Rabha dreamed of a classless society free from all kinds of exploitation and he used all means, political as well as cultural, to motivate the poor people to overthrow the regime backed by exploiters. His revolutionary campaign in this regard earned him the title of Sainik Silpi, Talukdar said, adding that due to his intimate association with the common people, Rabha could become the peoples artist.

On the cultural front, Rabha not only enriched Assamese culture through his invaluable contributions, he also brought people from all castes and creeds on to a common platform in the greater interest of the society.

Talukdar rued that the present political forces were trying to destabilise society by replacing the age-old traditions. She also observed that the growth of politics based on ethnic and religious identity was a dangerous portent as it would divert attention from all basic problems.

Former vice principal of Goalpara College, Prof AA Kashem, who also spoke on the occasion, stressed the need of spreading the works and ideals of Rabha among the people.

Noted sports personality Monowar Ali spoke on some personal experiences he had in the company of Rabha. This session was followed by a discussion and recitation of the Kalagurus compositions. Local artistes also performed on the occasion.

The concluding speech was delivered by retired principal of Goalpara College, Prof Amiya Kumar Boro, who described Rabha as a Marxist visionary who inspired the common people to fight for a developed and socialist society all through his life.
