Raas festival at Majuli

JORHAT, Nov 6 � Based on the central theme of Lord Krishna�s divine love a three-day Raas Mahotsav is being celebrated in Majuli from Thursday in 56 places across the length and breadth of the river island.

Literally every home in the localities is abuzz with activity to make the three-day festival a grand success. Rehearsals for special performances concluded on Wednesday, while mask artists gave their final touches to different masks of legendary characters of the dramatic performance.

Dakhinpat, Kamalabari and some other satras are going to perform Raas puja on Thursday (Raas Purnima) several cultural committees have prepared their stages for dramatic performance of Raas Leela, depicting the life and divine love of Lord Krishna.

However, the original play Keligopal (Raas Leela) will be performed in Brajawali in Natun Samaguri Satra where the audience will enjoy the mind-blowing performance of mask-wearing artistes.

Few of the local committees like the Sanmilito Silpi Samaj in Kamalabari invited cine-artistes to play roles in the drama where a lady researcher from France will participate in dance during the performance.

Apart from preparations for music, dance and drama, the traditional art form of mask-making will also take centrestage during the festival. Along with the visitors from different areas in the State hordes of foreign tourists have already reached Majuli to take part in the Raas festivities.
