PWD muster roll workers not paid wages

By Correspondent

TURA, June 14 - Close to 200 muster roll workers of the Resubelpara division of the PWD in the North Garo Hills district are yet to receive their monthly wages for the last four months. Some of these muster roll workers have already completed 20 to 30 years of service, but their jobs have not been regularised.

We are paid Rs 201 per day or Rs 6,030 per month. However, the payments made are very irregular. For the past four months though, we have not been paid anything, said a worker on condition of anonymity.

If our wages are due for five months, we will get the payment for only two or three months. The remaining amount will remain a matter of uncertainty. This has been happening on a regular basis, the worker rued.

Our families are suffering the most as the education of our children has been adversely affected, another worker said.

The workers also raised the issue of regularisation of their jobs. Some of us have been working for over 30 years. Still others have retired after 40 years of service without getting benefits, a worker pointed out.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Commissioner of the North Garo Hills district, SC Sadhu, promised to speak to the PWD authorities in this respect. However, no officials of the PWD could be contacted for comments in this respect.
