PWD issues advisory to engineers on bad roads

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Sept 25 - Faced with public anger over the early deterioration of the bituminous surface of the roads, especially in Guwahati city, the Public Works department has issued an advisory to all superintendent engineers and executive engineers.

The engineers have been asked to ensure that the contractors use only 60-70 IOC bitumen.

The contractors have been asked to maintain proper laying temperature and avoid laying the bituminous layer on wet and dusty surface. Need for proper rolling by static and BM rollers and strict supervision by the departmental engineer during execution of the road works were also underlined in the advisory.

Certain norms need to be followed to maintain quality of work as per Indian Roads Congress specifications. Recent incidents of early deterioration of the surface of some roads, especially under Guwahati city, have affected the image of the department, a senior PWD official admitted.
